Building and automating accessibility at Thrive

As part of our mission to uphold engineering excellence, I led accessibility audits with a third-party vendor and customers to certify our WCAG compliance. I delivered a 93% reduction in accessibility issues.

I took inspiration from our security audits to define goals, timelines, and metrics of success. Once we received the outcome, I triaged responsibility between design, design system, and engineering. This framework allowed me to transform individual issues into process changes and interventions across the company. To address issues moving forward, I refactored docs, updated components and shared tooling to prevent future issues. I also worked with stakeholders such as legal and product to convey the importance of accessibility.

Automation and tooling supported the effort to move beyond an “audit-fix-audit-fix” cycle. I summarized findings on areas of improvement and success in a report and in shareable graphics to underscore the importance of these changes.

I delivered our 2023 VPAT certifying and stating our compliance, noting up to a 47% reduction in accessibility issues from our previous audit. The following year, our customer noted a 93% reduction in accessibility issues. This multi-pronged approach has transformed the accessibility culture - everyone has a part to play in accessibility and small changes can roll into big wins.
